Rustic Wood Fireplace Mantels
Distinctive and Full of Character
Reclaimed wood is always distinctive and full of character, and our rustic mantels really highlight the unique raw features of each piece of wood. These rustic fireplace mantels have seasoned for decades so they’re less likely to shrink or warp from the effects of high heat exposure.
AVAILABLE EITHER SOLID OR ENGINEERED
Hand Hewn Mantels
Hand hewn beams were cut and hewn with broad axes and simple hand tools in locations where primitive sawmills were not available or being used. Massive old growth trees were transformed from round logs into square beams for barns, cabins and other buildings, now popular for fireplace mantels. Valued aesthetically as vintage Americana, the rugged texture is characterized by distinctive notches or dimensional lines and mortises.
Live Edge Mantels
Descriptions for live edge can be hard to pin down, but generally relate to the natural or outermost edge of a wood piece and its irregular border. What is prized includes that which is naturally occurring beneath the bark - not the bark itself, and may include unique wormholes and insect trails that resemble hieroglyphics. Retaining bark on a live edge mantel is not advised as bark will eventually fall away due to heat and loss of durability.
Original Surface, Natural Patina Mantels
Original surface wood texture on mantels is characterized by an attractive grayish patina, balanced and unblemished, that could only develop over time. Influenced by elements and environmental factors that cannot be duplicated, effluents or the lack of them in the air where they once stood can have a direct effect. When discovered, an even original surface natural patina on a mantel is a prize.
