These mantels have been accented with specific Craftsman details. They may have smooth surfaces from sanding or planing, or be carved, scored, routed or charred. Species plays a significant role in Craftsman custom fireplace mantels because they focus emphasis on virgin wood grain patterns … the mystery inside old wood.

Smooth Planed
A smooth texture is created by planing away the rough surface to expose the grain of the wood. Once removed, the wood shows off the subtleties of the interior grain patterns and its rich natural color, which we call “the mystery within the wood.”
Shou Sugi Ban
This is an ancient Japanese technique of charring wood with fire. This process not only gives a great aesthetic but also seals the wood and makes it less susceptible to future fires.
Box Mantels
We can use planks to create a hollow box mantel that is lightweight, easy to install, and also looks great.

We met with Aaron and his team during an open house at Whole Log. Everyone was super friendly. We picked a Heart Pine mantel design with charred edges. Beautiful outcome. Aaron went out of his way to help us through the design of support legs to match the mantel.
